The Big River Refresh: World River Day Litter Pick on the banks and on the River FromeWareham
A whopping 80% of plastic in the oceans originates from rivers! So come and help us do something about it by joining the Clean Up Dorset Squad (CUDS), Poole Harbour Canoe Club, and Queen Mary University of London’s Preventing Plastic Pollution team for The Big River Refresh to celebrate World Rivers Day and the last day of the Planet Purbeck Festival. By getting involved you can assist us collect valuable data for the Preventing Plastic Pollution project. PPP scientists from Queen Mary University of London will be on hand for a chat and to show volunteers how to itemise and weigh the litter they collect. This will help the project to understand sources of plastic pollution entering Poole Harbour so we can all work to implement change.
The Clean Up Dorset Squad, One Global Ocean, and QMULs scientists will also take to the water to complete a litter pick on the River Frome. Members of the public are invited to support this with a land-based litter pick on footpaths next to the Rivers Frome and Piddle. To take part please register for this event using the button below.
We will meet at 10am by Wanda the Waste Warrior Fish at the Wareham Community Performance Platform, on the southern bank of the River Frome, South Bridge, Wareham. PPP will then sign everyone in and give a health and safety briefing. We’ll then allocate different groups a patch to litter pick along the banks of the Frome or Piddle Rivers and provide litter pickers (bring your own if you have them), collecting bags and a survey form. Please bring your own gloves and wear sturdy shoes or boots.
